THE LACEMAKERS FROM FUNDÃO
In all the countries which I have visited so far, making laces was an activity that was meant to integrate the women from the local community. These women usually meet once a week, they made laces together, they sang, talked and shared their joys and sorrows, they gave each other advice and support. Never have I met a man, who would make laces, well at least not in a such traditional group.
I had the pleasure to observe such meetings in many places. I have always sensed a strong emotional bond between these women, full of closeness and warmth. Wherever I was, the lacemaking women were usually quite old; you won't find young women in such groups. Both making laces and building deep, emotional relations are processes that require time, attention and patience. Today, in the era of Facebook, those are deficit goods.
I have realized that my lace installations, which I do in different countries, are a good metaphor of such close bonds, that are built between women through the unique rhythm of their regular meetings and lace making. " The Lacemakers from Fundão" symbolically represents the vanishing relations, built on the basis of integration and the supportive role of the female circle.

KORONCZARKI Z FUNDÃO
We wszystkich krajach, które odwiedziłam, tkanie koronek było przede wszystkim czynnością integrującą krąg kobiet z lokalnej społeczności. Te tradycyjne grupy spotykają się zwykle raz w tygodniu. Kobiety wspólnie tkają, śpiewają, rozmawiają o swoich radościach i problemach, udzielają sobie rad i wzajemnie się wspierają. Nigdy nie spotkałam mężczyzny tkającego koronki, przynajmniej nie w takim kręgu.
Miałam przyjemność obserwować takie spotkania w wielu miejscach. Zawsze wyczuwałam pomiędzy tymi kobietami silne więzi emocjonalne, bliskość i serdeczność. Wszędzie, gdzie byłam, koronczarki były już osobami w podeszłym wieku, młodych kobiet w tych kręgach nie ma. Zarówno tkanie koronek, jak i budowanie głębszych relacji emocjonalnych wymaga czasu, uwagi i cierpliwości. Dziś, w erze Facebooka, to towary deficytowe.
Zdałam sobie sprawę, że instalacje z koronek, które wykonuję na w róznych karjach, są metaforą takich więzi społecznych, budowanych poprzez rytm stałych spotkań. "Koronczarki z Fundão" to praca, która symbolicznie przedstawia takie odchodzące w przeszłość relacje, budowane w oparciu o integracyjną i wspierającą rolę kobiecego kręgu.
